Layers of Passage | Interstate Sunset 1 | Original 36x48 in (91.44x121.92 cm) CP-A102

    About CP-A102 | 2026

    Description

Interstate Sunset 1, the artist transforms the fleeting experience of driving through Miami's highways at dusk into a vibrant meditation on memory, movement, and place. Inspired by the electric glow of South Florida sunsets, the work captures the sensation of witnessing the city through motion—where neon skies, passing structures, and fragments of urban life merge into a single atmospheric impression.

Built through successive layers of paint, collage, sanding, and mark-making, the surface becomes a visual archive of passage. Hidden forms emerge and recede beneath translucent veils of color, much like memories glimpsed through a car window before disappearing into the distance. Vivid oranges, saturated pinks, and luminous yellows evoke the radiant horizon, while darker linear elements suggest overpasses, roadways, signage, and the evolving geometry of the metropolitan landscape.

The composition does not depict a specific location. Instead, it captures the emotional residue of movement—the feeling of traveling between destinations while absorbing the ever-changing spectacle of light, infrastructure, and sky. The layers function as accumulated moments, each one recording a trace of experience, conversation, reflection, and time spent in transit.

Through its textured surface and vibrant palette,  Interstate Sunset becomes a cartography Layers of Passage. It is an abstract portrait of Miami's urban rhythm, where highways become rivers of light and the sunset serves as a luminous thread connecting the city's past, present, and future. Here, passage itself becomes the subject, and every layer becomes a reminder that the journey often leaves a deeper imprint than the destination.

    Care

To preserve the integrity of this mixed media canvas, display it in a dry, temperature-stable environment away from direct sunlight, humidity, and extreme heat. Avoid touching the surface directly, as the layered textures and delicate materials—such as paper fragments and metallics—can be sensitive to oils and abrasion. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth or a clean, natural-bristle brush. Do not use water, cleaning products, or compressed air. If long-term preservation is a concern, consider professional framing or consultation with a fine art conservator.

    Approach

Crismary Pascarella’s technique blends architectural thinking with intuitive mark-making, using layered paper fragments, collage, pigment, and text to create spatial compositions. She builds and erodes surfaces through sanding and layering, echoing the processes of memory and urban decay—transforming material into emotional geography.
